Kelli Murphy added yet another SCJGA title to her resume as she captured the 17th playing of the Picard Junior Classic after she shot an even par round of 72 to post the lowest overall score. The Elgin native posted three birdies in her round including the tough par 3 16th to post her score of 72. The boys division took extra play to determine the champion as three juniors tied at one over 73. Ford Blanchard, Jackson Moore, and William Godfrey all finished the day one stroke shy of par. A 20 foot birdie bid dropped on the second hole to give Godfrey his first SCJGA title. Jimmy Self took top honors in the boys 13-14 action while Wil Shepard and Annika Bovenden won their respective nine hole divisions.
Ford Blanchard and his dad Leonard took the overall honors in the Ford Parent Child after a one hole playoff. The low score in the division actually was posted by the Greenwood Team of Jimmy and Jay Self after they shot a great score of 72 in the select drive alternate shot format. Jimmy is actually competing in the boys 13-14 bracket and as such played a shorter tee than the rest of the flight. The same feat was accomplished last year by his cousin Coleman Self, showing the older players that these young guns can play too! Three teams of older players finished the day at one over 73. A birdie on the first sudden death hole earned the Orangeburg team their first Ford Parent Child Trophy over the Todd Family of Laurens and the Long crowd from Bluffton. The Links Course of Wild Dunes has been the host facility since inception and has been a vital part of the SCGA family of host golf courses. Polly?s Fine Jewelry is back again as the title sponsor for both rounds of the tournament. The first day’s festivities are named for seven time SCGA Amateur Champion Frank Ford with a parent ? child format. The second day?s event is named after Mr. Henry Picard who was one of the top SC golfers of all time as he won the Masters tournament, numerous PGA titles, and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. The second round of the tournament is for juniors only in an individual stroke play event as part of the Ford Picard Christmas Classic.
The Ford -Picard paves the way for youngsters to grow in the game and learn about our great SC players that came before them. Two former SCGA Amateur Champions played in the inaugural event in 1994 as juniors, Alex Hamilton and Emmett Turner. As a special treat this year, Beth Daniel was on hand to present the SCJGA Player of the year Award to McKenzie Talbert. The 2009 Solheim Cup Captain and LPGA Hall of Famer presents this award to the highest ranked player on the Heritage Classic Foundation Rankings as of December 1. Talbert was presented the award after play on Wednesday.
