Warmer temperatures and calm skies were welcomed as better scoring was the story of the final round of the 2011 Fall Challenge. The overall boy’s 15-18 competition was a battle coming down the stretch. Grant Waggoner finished on top to capture his first SCJGA title with a final round 71 and a two day total of even par one forty six. Defending champion, Matthew Nesmith, Charlie Spencer-White and Jonathan Hardee finished at one over par one forty seven. McKenzie Talbert won her third straight Fall Challenge title with a two day total of five under par. Runner up Kelli Murphy fired the low round of the tournament, 68, to pull within one shot of Talbert. Trevor Phillips made up a three shot deficit with a final round 74 and two day total of one forty nine to win the overall boys 13-14 title.
In the nine hole brackets at Moree’s Cheraw Country Club, Brady Hinkle took the boys 10-12 title. The Lancaster native finished up with a two day total of 71, making birdie on three of his last four holes. Hailey Cleary also fired a two day 71 with a final round 33 to take the girl’s 11-13 division. Rafe Reynolds and Jalen Castle both matched their opening rounds with 40 and 38 respectively to finish atop the boys 8-9 division and girls 8-10 division.
Cheraw State Park and Moree’s Cheraw Country Club are annual hosts to the largest SCJGA event. Players earned their way into the event by the past year’s play and five qualifying sites hosted close to 300 hopeful golfers who were outside the exemption list.
The Town of Cheraw, The Cheraw Chamber of Commerce and the Wine Factory presented a Players and Parents reception on Saturday from 3pm until 5pm for all players and their families as well as the many volunteers that make this event happen. The tournament has been chaired by SCGA Board Member Robby Bennett since inception and the hospitality shown from the town is a true reflection of Mr. Bennett, both golf courses, and volunteers that help put this must play championship on the competitive calendar.
