The 18th playing of the Ford Picard Christmas Classic finished today with two new champions being crowned. Bryce Howell put together a one bogey round of 73 to win the overall boys title on a day that tested every level of player. Cool and misty conditions marked a significant difference from yesterday’s chamber of commerce weather making scoring very difficult. Mary Chandler Bryan was playing with the defending champion, Kelli Murphy and both were pretty close all day. A chip in birdie on her last hole of the day gave the Chapin native a round of 76 and the girls Championship. Jamie Wilson claimed the 13-14 boy’s division after his two under par front nine of 34 helped him to finish at under par for the event. The Mount Pleasant native shot 71 for the day and won by two shots. Daniel Island’s Clara Park won the girl’s 13 and under bracket after a one hole playoff victory over Sarah Kennedy. Greenville native Evan White captured the younger boys by the slimmest of margins as he squeaked by Davis Yearout with a 44 nine hole total.
The 2011 Ford Adult-Child was played with arguably the best weather the event has ever seen in 18 years. The team of Jay and Jim Eskew captured the overall title by barely missing a birdie putt on the first playoff hole versus Jackson Moore and Bill Smunk. Team Eskew and Team Moore/Smunk fired 74 each and went to hole 10 to start the sudden death overtime. It is worth noting that Team Eskew only needed 14 clubs between the two of them to win as they were sharing Jay’s clubs. The team of Stuart and Wynn Gibbs also fired a 74, but played a shorter set of tees as they were younger players. The same situation took place with Jodee and Kevin Tindal who shot 73 in the fourth flight.
The Links Course of Wild Dunes has been the host facility since inception and has been a vital part of the SCGA family of host golf courses. Polly’s Fine Jewelry is back again as the title sponsor for both rounds of the tournament. The first day’s festivities are named for seven time SCGA Amateur Champion Frank Ford with a parent – child format. The second day’s event is named after Mr. Henry Picard who was one of the top SC golfers of all time as he won the Masters tournament, numerous PGA titles, and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. The second round of the tournament is for juniors only in an individual stroke play event as part of the Ford Picard Christmas Classic.
