The Country Club of Charleston welcomed 84 of the country’s top male and female junior golfers this morning for the first round of the 15th Beth Daniel Junior Azalea.

In the boys division, Colin Salema of Matthews, North Carolina and Hampton Roberts of Cary, North Carolina, each posted an impressive first round score of six-under par 65 to co-lead round one.

“I started off pretty well today,” said Roberts. “I birdied four and eagled five, so I was off to a good start. I kind of just cruised the rest of the way and had a pretty solid day. I’m just going to try and do the same thing I did today, tomorrow, hit it about the same, make some putts and hopefully go low.”

“It was a pretty smooth day,” said Salema. “I got off to a little bit of a slow start, but it was a solid day off the tee and I gave myself a lot of shots on the greens and was able to make some putts. I’m just going to try and do the same thing off the tee tomorrow and get it in the fairway and get it in play.”

Mason Kucia of Indian Land, South Carolina and Jack Wieler of Waxhaw, North Carolina sit T3, each finishing the day at four-under par 67.

In the girls division, Elizabeth Rudisill of Charlotte, North Carolina had six birdies and carded a first round score of three-under par 69 to lead round one in the girls division.

“I started off good today with a birdie,” said Rudisill. “I struggled on my first two holes but turned my round around with back-to-back birdies and kept the momentum going with a few good up and down pars. I think if I can make some more putts and have better speed on the greens, I can keep the lead going.”

Saia Rampersaud of Durham, North Carolina, finished with a first-round score of one-under par 71 to sit solo second.

The second round of the Beth Daniel Junior Azalea begins Wednesday, August 10, 2022, at 9:00 A.M. off #1 and #10.
