Nicholas Gross of Downingtown, PA, finished the day seven-under par 64 to claim the title in the boy’s division of the Beth Daniel Junior Azalea. Six shots clear of the tournament record, Gross finished at 20-under par 193 overall.
“Today was basically a perfect round start to finish,” said Gross. “I had seven birdies and no bogies. I tried to keep the mistakes off the card and stay patient and it end up working just fine. This is my lowest 54-hole total ever and its special to do it on a course like this. This is a really nice way to finish the summer and I’m just looking forward to what the future holds. It feels unreal to be the champion, I am definitely going to enjoy this one for a while.”
Trey Marrion of Chesapeake, VA, fought his way to the top of the leaderboard finishing at 11-under par 202 to claim solo second. He shot a seven-under par 64 for the final round.
Kiera Bartholomew of Wake Forest fired a tournament total of 10-under 206 to secure the title in the girls division of the Beth Daniel Junior Azalea. She finished the final round at three-under par 69.
“I was pretty steady par the whole way up until 13 and was trying to stay patient,” Bartholomew said. “On 13 I had a long putt and it hit the pin and dropped, so that’s when things started to get a little better. I had a good up and down on 18 and tried to stay calm as best as I could today. Today was my first bogey free round, so that felt good. It’s really amazing to be the champion. Last year was my first time playing in this tournament and I was so excited to come back, so it’s a great feeling to have been able to get it done.”
Elizabeth Rudisill of Charlotte and Morgan Ketchum of Winston Salem, each posted six-under 210 overall to finish in a tie for second place.
The SCJGA would like to extend a special thanks to all of the Beth Daniel Junior Azalea sponsors, the Beth Daniel committee as well as the Country Club of Charleston staff and membership for their generous contribution, gracious hospitality and continuous commitment to growing the game of golf in South Carolina.
