Major Lenning of Simpsonville defended his title and claimed victory in the boys 13-18 division of the 26th Annual Jimmy Self Invitational. Lenning finished the day one-under 71 to secure the title becoming the sixth back-to-back champion since 2011. Overall, he fired two-under 214.
“My round felt pretty good today,” Lenning said. “I felt like I putted well and got up and down a lot. It feels good to be the back-to-back champion. That was definitely one of my goals going into this tournament, so it feels good and definitely brings a lot of confidence.”
Walker Felton of Mt. Pleasant battled hard posting two-under 70 for the final round, to claim second place. Overall, he carded one-under 215 for the event.
Entering the day two-shots behind the round two co-leaders, Bridget Wilkie of Bluffton fought her way to the top of the leaderboard to claim victory in the girls 13-18 division. Firing an impressive six birdies, she finished the day three-under 69. Overall, she carded three-over 219 for the tournament.
“My round today was a little bit up and down,” Wilkie said. “I started out really well with a couple of birdies and then had three birdies on 15, 16 and 17 which really helped me out. I’m younger in this field, so this win shows me that I can play with older girls and still compete. It feels amazing to be the champion. This is my first time playing in this event and I am really proud that I won it.”
Caroline Hawkins of Columbia finished second in the girl’s division, posting a final round of four-over 76. She finished eight-over 224 for the tournament.
The SCJGA would like to offer a special thanks to the Self family, Palmetto Dunes-Arthur Hills and Greenwood Communities and Resorts for their gracious hospitality and continuous commitment to growing the game of golf in South Carolina.
Named in honor of a man who gave so much to golf, the Jimmy Self Invitational has become one of the top high school tournaments in South Carolina and has hosted some of the top junior players in the southeast. The 54-hole event has been presented by Greenwood Development since its inception. The original idea was to rotate the tournament’s location between Greenwood Development properties in Charleston, Greenwood and Hilton Head Island. Now, the tournament permanently resides at the Arthur Hills Course at Palmetto Dunes. This year’s competition at Palmetto Dunes continues the Jimmy Self Invitational’s legacy, adding to South Carolina’s rich history of amateur and junior golf.
