Entering the day with a one-shot lead, Rowan Sullivan of Charleston needed to play a consistent final round for a chance to claim the SCGA Junior Championship title. Despite battling through adversity and triumph through his final round, Sullivan was able to capture the Charles Rountree Junior Championship trophy after a final round score of one-under-par 70 and a tournament total of three-under-par 210.
“After my birdie on one I was thinking, we have 17 holes to go,” Sullivan said. “Two-shots is not enough when I am this nervous and I was nervous all day.”
After birdies on hole one and three, Sullivan found adversity when he was notified of a two-stroke penalty placed on him on his fourth hole. The penalty forced Sullivan from a comfortable four-shot lead to a one-shot lead. Following the penalty, Sullivan would still finish his front nine at one-over-par on the round. He would then proceed to shoot a two-under-par 33 on the back nine to become the champion.
“I persevered and I am proud of myself,” Sullivan says. “Turning the back nine I said to myself, prove to everyone who you can be and who you are. I wanted to see myself win one and this is going to be huge for my confidence.”
Luke Sullivan finished the day one-shot behind to take second place. For the final round, Sullivan shot one-under-par 70. Overall, he carded two-under-par 211 for the championship.
Zach Phillips of Inman fought to grab a spot on the leaderboard posting one-under 70 for the final round to claim third place.
The top eight finishers qualified for the 46th annual Georgia-South Carolina Junior Team Matches. Those players include champion, Rowan Sullivan, Luke Sullivan, Zach Phillips, Major Lenning, Drew Harrill, Adam Hunt, David Oliver IV and Jerry Bruns.
