Manning, S.C.– Unseasonably high winds greeted the 90 competitors in the first round of the Tommy Cuthbert All Stars Championship.
The breezy conditions led to difficult scoring conditions on Saturday with only eight players in the field posting rounds of even-par or better. Pars came at a premium in round one, with only 78 birdies being carded in the 90-player field.
The day’s lowest scores relative to par all came from the Boys 10-12 division. John Wylie Richardson (Florence Chapter) was the lone player in the field to go without making a single bogey on Saturday. Richardson enters Sunday’s final round at 3-under par (33) and in a tie for first place with Hunter Parsons (Hilton Head Chapter), who made an eagle on the par-five ninth hole to jump into the overnight lead. The Boys 10-12 contest is sure to have an exciting finish with seven players currently within four shots of the lead.
Luis Thompson (Mount Pleasant Chapter) made a birdie on his final hole of the day to card 1-under par (71), giving him a two-stroke lead in the Boys 15-18 age bracket. Thompson was the lone 18-hole player to break par on Saturday and will look to build on his solid performance tomorrow.
In the Girls 13-18 contest, Taylor Reaves (Myrtle Beach Chapter) holds a three-shot advantage through Saturday’s round after posting 3-over par (75). She will look to capture her first SCJGA Major Championship on Sunday.
The tightest leaderboard following day one belongs to the Boys 13-14 division, which has a four-way tie for the overnight lead at four-over par (76). Simon McAlister (Beaufort Chapter), Harris Holstein (Columbia Chapter), Michael Gavin (Hilton Head Chapter) and Carter Allison (Myrtle Beach Chapter) all head into Sunday with a share of the 18-hole lead.
Daisy Pease (Hilton Head Chapter) posted a score of 57 on the front nine on Saturday, which is good enough for her to hold a three-stroke lead after round one.
The Boys 7-9 age bracket is currently led by Connor Wolfe (Columbia Chapter), who made one birdie and one bogey to card even-par (36).
Ella Kate Barnett (Myrtle Beach Chapter) currently holds a one-shot advantage in the Girls 10-12 division after posting eight-over par (44) on day one. Cayleigh Jane Goff (Florence Chapter) trails by a single stroke.
Sunday’s final round will begin at 7:30 a.m. with all players starting on Hole #10. The Tommy Cuthbert All Stars Championship is comprised of players representing seven chapters of the SCJGA’s Hootie & the Blowfish Junior Golf Series: Beaufort, Columbia, Florence, Hilton Head, Mid-State, Mount Pleasant, and Myrtle Beach.
