Hilton Head Island, S.C. – Celebrating it’s 25th year, the Jimmy Self Invitational Presented by Greenwood Communities and Resorts welcomed players to Hilton Head Island’s Palmetto Dunes Resort – Arthur Hills Course where it wouldn’t take long for the day to start heating up. With an occasional ocean breeze, the Arthur Hills designed course would provide just the test competitors needed in the opening round.
Starting the day in red numbers, Hannah Altman (Lake City) would quickly jump atop the leaderboard. Carding a double-bogey on her 9th hole, Altman would rebound rapidly – beginning the back nine with three birdies in a row. She would remain consistent and ultimately card an even-par 72 to take a one shot lead into the second round. Local standout Camila Burnett (Bluffton) will be right on the heels of Altman, sitting only one shot back at one-over par. Reigning champion Buggy Reinke (Rock Hill) suffered a late double-bogey on the 17th hole but sits in solo 3rd placing her in position to go low in round two.
Major Lenning (Simpsonville) would start his day off strong with a birdie on the first hole followed by two additional birdies on on 4th and 6th hole. As he made the turn Lenning would be joined atop the leaderboard with fellow competitor, Jacob Hoyle (Simpsonville), at -1 under par. Carding four birdies on the back nine would allow Lenning to finish the day at -5 under par (67), giving him a one shot lead over Hoyle heading into the second round. Five birdies and an eagle on the 18th would be enough for Lucas Acevedo of Daniel Island to find himself alone in 3rd, carding a -3 under (69).
The second round of the Jimmy Self Invitational will begin at 8am with players teeing off #1 tee. Upon completion of the final round, the Girls field will be cut to the low 14 and ties and the Boys field will be cut to the low 33 and ties to compete in the final round. The Jimmy Self Invitational is a junior specific tournament designed to showcase great players across the US. The Invitational is named for Jimmy Self, former Chairman-of-the-Board for Greenwood Mills, who died in 1995. Mr. Self served as captain of the golf team at Clemson in 1964 & 65, was on the South Carolina Golf Association Board from 1969-71 and was generous to the game of golf in the years that followed. The parties involved felt this tournament would be a great tribute to the man that gave so much to golf. First beginning as a high school team event, moving to an individual event in 2004. The presenting sponsor, Greenwood Communities and Resorts, owned and operated by the Self family has steadily, smartly, and impressively built a family of resort, residential and commercial communities in the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida.
