Pawleys Island, S.C. – One hundred and twenty of the most decorated and accomplished junior golfers from South Carolina will compete to become the 62nd SCGA Junior Champion at Tradition Golf Club of Pawleys Island on June 8-10, 2020.
Austin Scott (Daniel Island) earned the title of SCGA Junior Champion in 2019 by prevailing in a playoff at the Country Club of Lexington. The Bishop-England standout will look to become only the seventh player to successfully defend his title in the 62-year history of the SCGA Junior Championship Presented by the Heritage Classic Foundation. Joining Scott amongst the tournament favorites is Gene Zeigler (Florence), who built on his top-8 finish in 2019 to become the SCJGA’s Jay Haas Player of the Year and the Carolinas Junior Player of the Year.
Matthew Hutto (Blythewood) and Trey Crenshaw (Lancaster), in addition to Scott and Zeigler, were also members of the victorious South Carolina team in the 2019 SC-GA Team Matches. Their experience in contention last year should pay off in this year’s event.
As a result of his recent dominating performance at the CGA’s Jimmy Anderson Boys’ Junior Invitational, Adam Hunt (Columbia) has played his way into the list of favorites. Jerry Bruns (Beaufort) has also played consistently well as of late, and will look to continue his success from last year’s SCGA Junior Championship, where he took first place in the Boys 13-14 Division.
Two additional players that have recently made their mark on junior golf throughout the state are 2019 Blade Junior Classic and SC Junior Match Play Champion Mason Tucker (Lancaster) and 2020 Morgan Lucas Champion Daniel Brasington (Woodruff). Brasington rounds out the returning competitors from the 2019 SC-GA Team Matches, which he earned by finishing in the top-8 of last year’s championship.
In total, 18 of the top-25 ranked players in the SCJGA’s Heritage Classic Foundation rankings will tee it up on June 8 with the goal of becoming the 2020 SCGA Junior Champion. The SCGA Junior Championship is one of the longest-running state championship events and boasts an excellent list of accomplished players as past champions, including Lucas Glover, Wesley Bryan, Charlie Rymer, Jack Lewis, and a multitude of other notable players who have hoisted the Charles Rountree, Jr. Trophy.
A continued partnership with the South Carolina Golf Association, The Heritage Classic Foundation will again be the presenting sponsor of the Junior Championship, showcasing the best players across the state. A 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization, the Heritage Classic Foundation is dedicated to supporting educational and charitable initiatives to enhance quality of life and economic vitality by hosting the RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing, South Carolina’s only PGA TOUR golf tournament.
