Sydney Roberts (Chesnee) and Daniel Brasington (Woodruff) each kept hold of their first-round leads to win the 2020 Morgan Lucas Championship

Greenville, SC— Greeted with similar temperatures as in round one, the final round of the Morgan Lucas Championship Presented by Marchant Real Estate leaderboard would also be very similar. With blustery winds that created some challenging approach shots, players were forced to play safe to tucked hole locations and strategically play the course to get rewarded.

Following an opening round one over par (73), Sydney Roberts (Chesnee) would never lose sight of her lead in the final round. A “clean” round as she referred to her even-par 72, Roberts would begin the day with a four shot lead and end the day a champion by three shots. Capturing her first SCJGA major win, Roberts expressed “This win means a lot to me because of being my first and being able to put two rounds together that were consistent.” 2019 champion MK Talledo (Spartanburg) would secure the runner-up spot after she fired a final round one-under par 71, carding a three-under 33 on the front nine. Rounding out the top three was Greenville’s Sarah Boteler who posted a final round even-par.

Red numbers would remain prominent in the final round as Woodruff’s Daniel Brasington carded a one-under par, 71 to capture the champion’s title by two shots. Brasington gave credit to consistent ball striking as his key to success over the weekend and complimented his pairing for keeping the round lively. “It was a great pairing today that helped me forget about the tournament aspect and focus on having fun and making good shots.” said Brasington. Beaufort’s Jerry Bruns would leap inside the top three, securing a second place posting a three-under par 69. Ford Reynolds would have one of his best events to kick-start his season, tying Blythewood’s Matthew Hutto for third place.

Greenville Country Club’s Chanticleer Course, designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., is consistently ranked as one of the top courses in Upstate. The 6,900 yard, par-72 layout is known to be an exemplary challenge, with some of the toughest greens in the state. GCC’s Chanticleer Course is the annual host of the Chanticleer Four-Ball and Senior Four-Ball Invitational, in addition to hosting the SCGA Amateur Championship many times, most recently in 2015.

The SCJGA would like to graciously thank the staff at Greenville Country Club’s Chanticleer Course, entire Greenville Country Club staff and membership and especially the presenting sponsor of the event – Marchant Real Estate.
