U.S. Women’s Four-Ball
Timuquana Country Club
Jacksonville, FL
April 27 – May 1, 2019
Three teams comprised of SCJGA members represented well in the state of Florida for the U.S. Women’s Four-Ball, hosted by Timuquana Country Club. The SC teams consisted of Isabella Rawl (Lexington) and Karlee Vardas (Lexington), Sophia Burnett (Bluffton) and Isabella Van Der Biest (Kingsport, TN), and Kennedy Carroll (Mt. Pleasant) and Rachel Rich (Mt. Pleasant).
The path of Isabella Rawl and Karlee Vardas involved rounds of 69-69 in the stroke play portion of the event, which earned them a No. 7 seed in the match play seeding. Their Round of 32 match was highlighted with a birdie to win on the 22nd hole against Megan Buck (Norton, MA) and Shannon Johnson (Sioux Falls, SD). This victory sparked a match with Melena Barrientos (Plano, TX) and Calynne Rosholt (Cedar Park, TX) in the Round of 16. Sixteen holes later the Lexington natives forced the Texas duo into dormie and after halving the 17th hole with pars, the match resulted in a 2 & 1 victory. Unfortunately, the run ended for the SC pair in the Quarterfinals with a 6 & 5 defeat as Sadie Englemann (Austin, TX) and Rachel Heck (Memphis, TN) torched the Jacksonville area course after being 4-under through 13-holes.
Another team with South Carolina ties included Bluffton native Sophia Burnett who fared well in the Four-Ball format of the event. The team of Burnett and partner, Isabella Van Der Biest, advanced to match play after rounds of 72-68 to earn the No. 17 seed. The pair ousted Florida natives Laura Edmonds (Weston, FL) and Elle Nachmann (Boca Raton, FL) after a 16-hole skirmish that resulted in a 3 & 2 triumph. The Round of 16 match featured sisters Avery French (Laguna Niguel, CA) and Whitney French (Monarch Beach, CA) who ended the run for the Burnett team after halving with pars on the 18th hole, to result in a devastating 1-down defeat.
The remaining Mt. Pleasant team of Kennedy Carroll and Rachel Rich failed to make match play after rounds 74-70 to miss the match play format by two shots.
