With severe weather threatening and ultimately mother nature forcing her hand, the 2012 Georgia South Carolina Junior Matches concluded Saturday where they left off Friday afternoon – tied. For only the second time in history, although two of the last three years, the longest running interstate Junior Matches in the country finished tied at only four points per team. In 2010, the Matches ended in a draw at eight points per team when the event concluded in regulation. This is only the second time the event has been cut short due to inclement weather conditions.
The 2012 Matches were contested at Cuscowilla on Lake Oconee golf course in Eatonton, Georgia. Both states earned four points during the first round of competition. Teams from both states were selected by accepting the top eight finishers at each state’s Junior Championship. The event is match play with one point available per match. In the result of a tie, both players would earn half a point for their respective team.
Thirty-seven years ago, Pete Cox of the Georgia State Golf Association and Charles Rountree, Jr. of the South Carolina Golf Association formalized the idea of the GA – SC team matches. The winning team has their victory inscribed on the beautiful Rountree – Cox trophy that was donated by the Rountree family. Every junior golfer that has participated in the 36 year old competition will find his name on the trophy with his teammates. The Georgia teams have produced 22 victories as compared to the 13 for the SC teams. In 2010 the first ever tie in the history of the event occurred!
