Reona Hirai wrapped up her 2012 SCJGA season with back to back victories. Hirai, a Summerville native, won two weeks ago at the Cheraw Fall Challenge and added a Players Championship victory today. Reona cruised around the first nine at even par and managed three birdies on her back nine to claim the 2012 title. Kelli Murphy, who teamed with Reona in the Tradition Four Ball, finished second. Trace Crowe (Easley) finished several groups ahead of the leaders and posted one over 145 after several birdies gave him a second round 70. The 2012 Boys Champion was able to hold on as his score of 2 under was low for the day and good enough to clinch the title.
The Boys 13-14 brackets has Jamie Wilson of Mt Pleasant as this year’s champion after his two over 74 gave him a six stroke margin of victory over Greenville’s Stephen Reynolds. Drew Weary had two lone bogeys in his 18 hole total of 74 to win the boys 10-12 bracket and Jensen Castle captured yet another SCJGA title in the girls 11-13 bracket. Just like Reona Hirai, Castle also won several weeks back at the Cheraw Fall Challenge.
The tournament is hosted by the membership of Hartsville CC and presented by the Dustin Johnson Foundation. As one of the PGA Tours young guns, Dustin has separated himself as a class act and one of the most talented players on tour. The only player from SC to be on the Walker and Ryder cup teams wanted to give back to junior golf and the Players Championship was a great venue for him to do so.
The festivities started off with a Marine Wounded Warriors outing followed by an impressive barbeque thanks to the world famous French Fry Guys. A glow ball competition also took place on Friday evening as the families were welcomed to Hartsville.
