FRIPP ISLAND, SC (Feb. 4, 2023) – The second rendition of the Fripp Island Junior Challenge began on Saturday morning, as 75 junior golfers braved the windy conditions at Ocean Point Golf Links. Due to the unrelenting wind and chilly temperatures, scoring came at a premium on Saturday. Only five competitors posted rounds in the 70s in round one.

In the boys 13-18 division, North Augusta’s Luke Johnson carded the low round of the day with a four-over par 76. Johnson holds a one-stroke advantage in the headed into Sunday’s final round over Walker Faust of Greer.

 

Owen Atkinson of Columbia rounds out the final pairing on Sunday as he currently sits at six-over par.

 

Aynor’s Reese Richardson leads the girls 13-18 division by a single stroke over Karsyn Herron of Graniteville. Richardson posted a round of 15-over par 87 on Saturday.

 

Mary Katherine Dutcher of Sumter sits in third place, five strokes behind Richardson.

 

Sunday’s final round will be contested at Ocean Creek Golf Course, and it is set to begin at 8:00 A.M .

 

About the SCJGA Players Series

 

In February of 2022, the South Carolina Junior Golf Association announced a brand-new tournament series called the Players Series that is designed to give junior golfers from South Carolina the opportunity to develop their skills and earn exemptions into future Major Championships hosted by the SCJGA. The Players Series began with the Fripp Island Junior Challenge in early February and contested 15 different tournaments by the end of 2022.

 

All Players Series events are included in the Heritage Classic Foundation Rankings, as well as the year-long Players Series points standings, which will reward players with exemptions into future SCJGA Major Championships based on the standings at the conclusion of the year. All Players Series events are included in the year-long points race, as well as all statewide SCJGA One-Days such as the President’s Day One Day.
