GREENWOOD, SC (August 2, 2023) – Outstanding weather led to prime scoring conditions for the final round of the Players Series at Greenwood CC. Eight players carded final rounds of even-par (72) or better on Wednesday morning.

In the Girls 13-18 division, Merritt Barbrey (Columbia) posted a final round score of even-par (72) en route to her maiden SCJGA Players Series victory. The 2026 graduate made four birdies to go along with four bogeys to post a tournament total score of three-over par (147) and a three-stroke victory over runner-up Karsyn Herron (Graniteville).

 

Barbrey's victory at Greenwood CC helped her jump 16 spots in the Players Series point standings. The Columbia native now sits in fourth place with six events remaining on the Players Series schedule in 2023.

 

Greer's Brennan Kelly held the Boys 13-18 overnight lead and followed up his excellent performance on Tuesday with a solid round of one-under par (71) that included five birdies. Kelly's tournament total of four-under par (140) resulted in his first Players Series title, as the 2027 graduate finished one stroke ahead of Garrett Gillespie (Williamston).

 

Kelly began the tournament sitting in 85th place on the Players Series points list, and his win at Greenwood CC has him currently sitting in seventh place.

About the SCJGA Players Series

 

In February of 2022, the South Carolina Junior Golf Association announced a brand-new tournament series called the Players Series that is designed to give junior golfers from South Carolina the opportunity to develop their skills and earn exemptions into future Major Championships hosted by the SCJGA. The Players Series schedule begins with the Fripp Island Junior Challenge in early February and consists of 15 different tournaments by the end of 2023.

 

All Players Series events are included in the Heritage Classic Foundation Rankings, as well as the year-long Players Series points standings, which will reward players with exemptions into future SCJGA Major Championships based on the standings at the conclusion of the year. All Players Series events are included in the year-long points race, as well as all statewide SCJGA One-Days such as the President’s Day One Day.
