We at the SCJGA try to keep our rules knowledge sharp for our great players by attending PGA/USGA Rules of Golf workshops. These are four day workshops that have three days of classroom learning from 8am-5pm then followed by a 100 question exam on the fourth day. Over 100 “students” were in attendance that included state golf associations from around the country and as far as Puerto Rico. The event was being held at Chateau Elan in Georgia, which happens to also house the main headquarters of the AJGA. They were well represented by having 22 of the 100 students in the room. As always with the first night of Rules School, there is a reception following the first day for the students. This year was special as the AJGA invited everyone to their offices for the reception. It was a treat to walk those hallways and look at the players that have come through their events. Something I found really special is that South Carolina’s own Matt Nesmith had his picture on the wall as the Rolex Player of the Year.
We just completed our second One Day tournament of the year at the Windermere Club in Blythewood on Feb. 18th. We changed up the format this event to Stableford Points to introduce the kids to a new style of stroke play. I was truly surprised at how many of the “older” juniors had not played or even heard of this format before. The feedback seemed that the kids enjoyed it, especially since they were able to pick up if they missed their bogey stroke. We did start something new in 2013, giving our 18 hole bracket winners of the One Day’s a SCJGA putter head cover signifying the victory. Only one way to get one, you have to compete and win. We hope to see you on the fairways with us soon!!!
