LANCASTER, S.C.– A beautiful spring day set the stage for 101 competitors at Lancaster Golf Club on Sunday for the 28th Annual “Papa Ed” Caddie Classic. Firm and fast conditions on the fairways of the Donald Ross design made for a formidable challenge as only five players posted scores of even par (72) or better for the day.
The round of the day belonged to Mount Pleasant native Walker Felton, who began his round in the penultimate pairing and played a solid front nine, making the turn at one-under par. Felton would bogey the tricky 11th hole for his lone dropped shot of the day, but finish his round in a flurry with an eagle on the par-five 16th and a clutch birdie on the par-4 18th to clinch the victory by a single stroke over runner-up OT Mitchell (Fort Mill). Rounding out the top-three in the Boys 13-18 division was Miles Eubanks (Warrenville) who carded a one-under par round of 71.
The Girls 13-18 Division had no shortage of drama as well, with Skye Two Hawks Skenandore (Aiken) emerging victorious from a crowded leaderboard for her maiden SCJGA victory. Skenandore started her round quickly, carding birdies on three of her first six holes to give herself a sizable lead at the turn. That lead would prove to be just enough as the Aiken native would finish at one-over par (73) and take home the title. Emily Baker (Chapin) claimed second place at two-over par (74) and 2026 graduate Caroline Hawkins (Columbia) finished alone in third place at three-over par (75).
Special thanks to the Lancaster Golf Club for hosting the Caddie Classic and to Marilyn Thompson for her sponsorship in honor of “Papa Ed” Thompson! Ed Thompson always had a special place for children and helping ones in need. For nearly 20 years, his mission was to find out what Greenwood (Indiana) children needed and get it for them. He started the Clothe-A-Child and kept the program going for almost two decades which still goes on today. After his passing in 2016, Marilyn decided to keep his spirit of giving alive with the SCJGA in the form of a sponsorship. In 2017 she donated 30 sets of brand new junior clubs to the Indiana Junior Golf. This year she is donating 70 brand new Wilson sets to the SCJGA to distribute to aspiring junior golfers in need of clubs. We thank Marilyn and the Connell family for their donations and efforts to grow the game of golf thru compassion while helping a child.
