Fountain Inn, S.C.– Clear skies and low scoring were the theme of the day for the final round of the Thomas D. Todd All Stars Championship at Carolina Springs Golf Club.
Heading into Sunday’s final round, five of the seven age divisions had at least a two-way tie at the top of the leaderboard. Exciting finishes were to be expected, and most of the contests were tightly contested to the very end.
The first champion crowned of the day was overnight leader Emily Baker (Tri County), who made birdie on her final hole to match her first round score of 4-over par (76) and win the Girls 13-18 division by one stroke. Ansley Bryson (Upstate) and Sofia Carles (Piedmont) each played solid rounds on Sunday to post 9-over par (153) for the tournament and tie for runner-up honors.
Bryce Wittmer (York County) hit the shot of the tournament on his way to victory in the Boys 15-18 contest. The Fort Mill native made a hole-in-one on his eighth hole of the day that would propel him to the top of the leaderboard. Like Baker before him, Wittmer would make a birdie on the par-5 ninth hole to clinch a one-stroke victory at 1-under par (143). Ashton Eubanks (Tri County) and Spence Hagood (Piedmont) would each post even par (144) for the tournament to split second place.
Final round drama would continue in the Boys 10-12 age group, with Bennett Wiggins (Aiken) eventually taking a one-stroke victory by posting 1-under par (71) for the tournament. Jace Danbom (Upstate) charged up the leaderboard by posting a bogey-free, 2-under par (34) which led to him claiming runner-up honors.
Eighteen holes was not enough to decide a champion in the Boys 7-9 division. Following a sudden-death playoff that lasted three holes, Thomas DeMint (Greenville) would clinch the title over Heyward Jennings (Greenville) with his third-consecutive birdie in the playoff. The Greenville pair were tied after regulation at three-under par (69).
Chase Cline (Tri County) got off to a great start in Sunday’s final round, posting 2-under par (34) on his front nine on his way to claiming the Boys 13-14 bracket in dominant fashion. Cline would go on to post 3-over par (147) to clinch a seven-stroke victory over runner-up Brady Bentley (Aiken).
The most convincing victory of the weekend was claimed by the Piedmont Chapter’s Talulah Grace Wilson in the Girls 7-9 division. Wilson took a seven-shot lead into Sunday and stayed in front of her competitors all day, eventually posting a total score of 93 for an eleven-stroke victory. Elin Sarstrand (Spartanburg) claimed runner-up honors and family bragging rights as her sister Maya Sarstrand took third place with a score of 108.
Karsyn Herron (Aiken) began her final round with birdies on her first two holes and never looked back on her way to becoming the Girls 10-12 champion. Herron posted 1-over par (37) on Sunday, which gave her a total score of 5-over par (77) and a four-stroke victory. First round co-leader Marissa Scaletta (Upstate) would finish second with a total score of 9-over par (81).
The team competition of the Thomas D. Todd All Stars Championship was taken by the Piedmont Chapter, led by Tommy Pendley, in the Girls division and the Greenville Chapter, led by Doug Brown and Robbie Gravley, in the Boys contest.
Seven chapters in the SCJGA’s Hootie & the Blowfish Junior Golf Series are represented at the Thomas D. Todd All Stars Championship: Aiken, Greenville, Piedmont, Spartanburg, Tri-County, Upstate, and York County.
