ANDERSON, SC (Oct. 10, 2021) – Final round results of the inaugural Jackie Seawell Junior Championship hosted by Cobb’s Glen Country Club in Anderson, SC on Sunday, October 10, 2021.

Tied for the lead entering the final round, Davis Petty of Spartanburg fired two birdies on the back-nine, finishing the day at one-under par 35 to claim victory in the boys 10-12 division. He finished the tournament at one-under par 71 overall.
“I think I played very well,” Petty said. “I had a few tough holes, but I also had a couple birdies which is what I think put me through. I feel very honored to be the champion. This was a hard tournament for me to win, and there are some great competitors in my age group, so I am very thankful to have won. Playing in the Jackie Seawell was amazing, and this is a big confidence booster for me.”
Bennett Scaletta of Belton claimed runner-up in this division, finishing at one-over par 73 overall. Scaletta posted one-under par 35 in the final round.
Caroline Richardson of Blythewood finished the tournament at 31-over par 103 to be crowned champion of the girls 10-12 division.
“I’ve only played in about five tournaments like this, and I had a lot of fun,” said Richardson. “It feels good to be the champion in my division and I am excited about it.”
Gracyn Cox of Aynor finished the day at 15-over par 51 to take second place in this division. Overall, she posted 41-over par 113 for the tournament.
Entering the day with an impressive eight-shot lead, Claire Green of Okatie posted a final round of seven-over par 79 to claim the first-place title in the girls 13-15 division and take home her first SCJGA win. Overall, she carded 13-over par 157 for the tournament.
“I played a pretty steady round today,” said Green. “It feels really good to be the first-ever Jackie Seawell Junior Champion in my division. Pulling off a win is big but being the first-ever is even bigger and it feels good and it’s very exciting. This definitely boosts my confidence and tells me that I can do it and just need to keep working and getting better.”
Posting an overall score of 22-over par 157, Ella Kate Barnett of Galivants Ferry took second place in this division and finished the final round at seven-over par 79.
In the boys 13-15 division, Deaton Reed of Lancaster played another consistent round carding two-under par 142 overall to claim the victory in this division and take home his first SCJGA win. He had four birdies today and finished with a final round of one-under par 71.
“I had some good shots today,” said Reed. “I hit a putt on 16 that was about ten feet for birdie that really helped me get going. I feel really honored to be the champion. It’s obviously the first year for this tournament and to win it just feels really good.”
Will Ruth of Moore claimed second place in this division finishing the day at three-under par 69. Overall, he was one-over par 145 for the tournament.
About Jackie Seawell
The Jackie Seawell Junior was created after Mr. Seawell’s passing on June 14, 2021, to honor him and his contributions to golf in Anderson, Aiken, and the state of South Carolina. The SCJGA is honored to be able to help administer a tournament named after one of our state’s great golf ambassadors.
Jackie Seawell, a native of Anderson, was the first golf professional at Cobb’s Glen Country Club in Anderson. During his long and successful career, he had a major and lasting impact on junior golf in Anderson and the state of South Carolina. He was dedicated to the game of golf and had a true passion for teaching and growing the game.
Mr. Seawell attended Anderson Boys’ High School and graduated from the University of South Carolina. At Boys’ High, he served as student body president and was MVP of the football and golf teams. He was a member of the Boys’ High 1959 state championship team. At the University of South Carolina, he was a four-year letterman and captain of the golf team. He won the 1964 South Carolina Intercollegiate individual title and led the Gamecocks to the 1964 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship.
After leaving Anderson, Mr. Seawell was the golf professional at Woodside Plantation in Aiken, director of golf at Sage Valley in Aiken and then became of the owner of Houndslake Country Club in Aiken.
Mr. Seawell received numerous awards and recognitions during his career. He was a member of the T.L. Hanna Athletics Hall of Fame, received the Thomas Hitchcock and William C. Whitney Palmetto Golf Club Award, the Golf Week Father of the Year Award, the University of South Carolina Department of Athletics Extraordinary Contributions Award and was honorary captain of the South Carolina PGA Palmetto Cup team. In 1998, Mr. Seawell was inducted into the South Carolina Golf Hall of Fame in recognition of his service to golf, the thousands of lives he impacted and his many accomplishments.
