Hilton Head Island, S.C. – Deja vu was the theme of the day for the opening round of the Sea Pines Junior Heritage at the Davis Love III designed Atlantic Dunes at Sea Pines Resort. Players were greeted with brisk temperatures stepping onto their respective tees to begin their round. As temperatures were low, the leaderboard would also see low numbers as the field didn’t show any sign of the chill being a factor.
Firing four birdies on her round for a 1-under par 71, local standout Savannah Hylton of Hilton Head Island tops the Girls Division with a one shot lead heading into the final round. Hylton spoke about her round saying, “I knew the tough holes were going to be in the middle of my round, so I wanted to grind out as many birdies as I could to make sure if I had any mess-ups I was covered and wouldn’t get behind.” Hylton will have some heat on her heels as two fellow South Carolinians will join the final pairing in a battle for the title. Adrian Anderson (Murrells Inlet, SC) sits one shot back while 4-A South Carolina State Champion Karlee Vardas (Lexington, SC) will round out the pairing sitting just three shots back.
With a slight advantage to playing in cold conditions, Luke Sample (New York, NY) was the only player to break 70 today, carding a 3-under par 69, holding a one shot lead over the Boys Division. Sample carded five birdies on his trek to the top of the leaderboard and credited steady play as the key to his low round. “I played the middle holes very well, hole 15 through hole 2 which is a tough stretch – and coming into today that was something that I targeted to do well,” expressed Sample. Sample will have a battle in the final pairing as Ian Glanton (Metter, GA) and Lance Simpson of Knoxville, Tennessee both sit just one back.
