Ninety Six, S.C.– Perfect fall weather greeted competitors on Sunday morning at The Golf Club at Star Fort for the SCJGA’s Back to School One Day. In total, 67 junior golfers participated in the event and tested their games on the George Cobb-designed track.
Max Green (Hilton Head Island) took the Boys 15-18 division by one stroke at two-under par (70) over runner-up Spence Hagood (Greenwood). Hagood posted one-under par a couple hours before Green finished, holding the clubhouse lead. Green made birdie on holes 14 and 15 to tie the clubhouse lead with three to play. After the Hilton Head Island native made pars on 16 and 17, it seemed as though there would be a playoff in the near future. Green then stuck his approach shot on the par-four 18th hole to within three feet of the hole, making birdie and taking the title by one shot.
The Girls 13-18 contest provided an equal amount of drama coming down the stretch, with Kate Nyers (Mount Pleasant) taking first place over Alexis Hodge (Lexington) by one stroke. Nyers made par on her final three holes to keep her one-stroke advantage, ultimately carding seven-over par (79).
The Boys 12 and Under bracket was taken in commanding fashion by Greenwood’s Andrew Wiley, who posted a round of three-over par (39) to win by seven shots. Parker Adler (Gaffney) took runner-up honors.
Madelyn Green (Okatie) emerged victorious from a competitive Girls 12 & Under division that only had a five-shot differential between all competitors. Green would post a score of 55, which was good enough for a three-stroke victory over Gabby Brice (Moore).
The Back to School One Day was also the final qualifier for the Harvey Brock Orange Jacket Classic on September 12-13. The following players earned exemptions into next weekend’s field: Claire Green, Frank Lockwood, Henry Hall, Adam Fennell, Ben McKinney, Drew Jeffords, and Roman Mullinax.
