Palmetto Dunes—Arthur Hills welcomed 100 players this morning for the first round of the 26th Annual Jimmy Self Invitational. Luke Block of Bluffton leads round one of the boys 13-18 division, posting three-under 69. He fired three birdies and an eagle to hold a one-shot lead.

“I started off great,” Block said. “I think I hit the first eight greens and I think my first birdie was the hardest putt I had from outside 15 feet. I played pretty solid on the back, missed a few birdie chances and made a good putt on 12 and then chipped in for eagle on 13. Going into tomorrow I’m just going to take the same approach. Irons and woods off the tee, not many drivers and just play smart.”

James Fulmer of Spartanburg stands second posting two-under 70 for round one.

In the girls 13-18 division, Anne Fernandez of Bluffton holds the lead carding even-par 72 for the day. Firing five birdies, she holds a one-shot lead heading into round two.

“I needed to pick my spots well,” said Fernandez. “I think today I was really accurate with my irons and my pitching, and I made five birdies! I managed to keep my composure today and I think that is really important when you’re playing with such great golfers, so I am happy about that. My plan moving forward is to hopefully not make as many mistakes and just take my time. fairways and greens are the goal.”

Emma Hunt of Lake City sits in second finishing the day one-over 73.

Named in honor of a man who gave so much to golf, the Jimmy Self Invitational has become one of the top high school tournaments in South Carolina and has hosted some of the top junior players in the southeast. The 54-hole event has been presented by Greenwood Development since its inception. The original idea was to rotate the tournament’s location between Greenwood Development properties in Charleston, Greenwood and Hilton Head Island. Now, the tournament permanently resides at the Arthur Hills Course at Palmetto Dunes. This year’s competition at Palmetto Dunes continues the Jimmy Self Invitational’s legacy, adding to South Carolina’s rich history of amateur and junior golf.
