CHARLESTON, SC (Aug.10, 2021) – First round results of the Beth Daniel Junior Azalea, Presented by Allstate – The Zack Kelly Agency, hosted by the Country Club of Charleston in Charleston, SC.

The Country Club of Charleston welcomed 84 players this morning for round one of the 2021 Beth Daniel Junior Azalea. In the boys 13-18 division, Nicholas Gross of Downingtown, PA, finished the day at nine-under par 62 to lead round one. He fired an impressive 11 birdies to hold a three-shot lead heading into round two.
“I got off to a really good start,” said Gross. “I birdied one, two and three so that was really nice. I kept it going and birdied five and then birdied eight and nine. I got another streak and birdied three in a row on the back. I started thinking a little too much which turned into a double on 14. But I got it back and birdied 15 and then made a 20-footer on 18 for 62 so that’s pretty cool. Really, I’m just going to try and do the same thing tomorrow and stay loose. The big thing is that I had fun today, so I’m just going to do that tomorrow and see what happens.”
William Jennings of Greenville shot six-under par 65 to stand second after round one.
Tip Price of Greenville stands third heading into round two, carding five-under par 66 for the round.
Firing seven birdies, Morgan Ketchum of Winston Salem finished the round at seven-under 65 to emerge as the round one leader in the girls 13-18 division. She holds a two-shot lead heading into round two tomorrow.
“I was making a lot of putts inside ten feet which was really helpful,” said Ketchum. “I was hitting my approach shots well and giving myself a lot of good looks and really short putts for birdie. Tomorrow, I’m just going to focus on one shot at a time and try not to get ahead of myself.”
Kiera Bartholomew of Wake Forest posted five-under par 67 for round one to stand second.
Elizabeth Rudisill of Charlotte and Macy Pate of Winston Salem stand tied for third in the girls division, each finishing the round at four-under par 68.
The Beth Daniel Junior Azalea is named after World Golf Hall of Fame Member and Charleston native Beth Daniel. Daniel finished her playing career with 41 professional victories including the 1990 Women’s PGA Championship. Beth’s impressive career and desire to grow the game of golf has led to South Carolina’s highest-ranked female junior golfer being presented with the Beth Daniel Player of the Year award each December.
