Manning, S.C.– Seven champions were crowned on Sunday at Wyboo Golf Club following the final round of the Tommy Cuthbert All-Stars Championship. Breezy weather on Saturday gave way to calm, clear skies on Sunday for fantastic scoring conditions.
Heading into the final round, all tournament divisions were tightly contested and set up for exciting finishes. No overnight leader held an advantage of greater than three strokes after Saturday’s first round.
Luis Thompson (Myrtle Beach Chapter) dominated the Boys 15-18 field for a commanding five-shot victory and the overall Boys championship. Birdies on his twelfth and fourteenth holes of the final round gave Thompson enough of a cushion to easily finish off his commanding victory. Eric A. Nord (Columbia Chapter) and Landen Seiffert (Florence Chapter) each posted five-over par (149) for the tournament to take a tie for second place.
Overnight leader Ella Kate Barnett (Myrtle Beach Chapter) was the first champion crowned of the day following her victory in the Girls 10-12 age bracket. Barnett began the day with a one-shot lead at 8-over par and improved on her first round score by six strokes on day two. A final round score of 2-over par (38) was good enough for a six-shot victory over runner-up Cayleigh Jane Goff (Florence Chapter).
Hunter Parsons (Hilton Head Chapter) emerged victorious from a crowded leaderboard in the Boys 10-12 division, posting four-under par (68) for the tournament. Will Ruth (Mid-State Chapter) and Jamen Sanders (Mount Pleasant) finished in a tie for second place at three-under par (69), just one stroke behind Parsons.
There was no shortage of final round drama in the Girls 7-9 contest, with Gracyn Cox (Myrtle Beach Chapter) taking first place by a single stroke over runner-up Daisy Pease (Hilton Head Chapter). Cox posted a two-round total score of 116 to take the title.
Eighteen holes was not enough to decide a champion in the Boys 7-9 division. Connor Wolfe (Columbia Chapter) and Zim Atkinson (Columbia Chapter) each finished their final hole deadlocked at four-over par (76). Wolfe immediately stuck a wedge shot close on the first playoff hole which led to a tournament-clinching birdie.
A playoff was also needed to decide a champion in the Boys 13-14 contest as fellow Columbia Chapter members Coleman Ferguson and Charles Cauthen finished their final holes of regulation in a tie at seven-over par (151). The sudden death playoff would reach the fourth hole before coming to an end after Ferguson made birdie on the challenging par-three thirteenth hole.
Taylor Reaves (Myrtle Beach Chapter) carded another solid round of three-over par (75) to take home first place in the Girls 13-18 division. Her total score of six-over par (150) resulted in a four-stroke victory. Alexia Milbrandt (Hilton Head Chapter) posted a second round score of four-over par (76), which gave her runner-up honors.
The Girls team competition of the Tommy Cuthbert All Stars Championship was taken by the Myrtle Beach Chapter, led by Dale Ketola. The Mount Pleasant Chapter, led by Jeff Burton, captured the Boys title.
Seven chapters in the SCJGA’s Hootie & the Blowfish Junior Golf Series are represented at the Thomas D. Todd All Stars Championship: Beaufort, Columbia, Florence, Hilton Head, Mid-State, Mount Pleasant, and Myrtle Beach.
