Lancaster, S.C. – The 25th Annual “Papa Ed” Caddie Classic was played on a warm but blustery day at Lancaster Golf Club. Ninety-eight junior golfers from across the state of South Carolina competed for 36 caddie spots and 4 alternate positions for the Monday After the Masters Celebrity Pro-Am scheduled for April 15, 2019 at Barefoot Resort in Myrtle Beach.
Simon Wright (Lancaster) won the Boys 13-18 Division with a one under par effort of 71. His round consisted of an opening nine of 34 that included 4 birdies. Wright finished one shot ahead of Elliott Pope (Lugoff) and Matthew Hutto (Blythewood) both finishing with even par rounds of 72.
Kennedy Gooding (Lexington) claimed the top spot in the Girls 13-18 Division with a 5 under par 68. Gooding’s round included one eagle, three birdies and 14 pars. When asked about her first SCJGA Major Championship, Gooding credited her driving and putting. She drove the par four 10th and 17th hole. “After making the 35 footer for eagle on 17 I felt confident I could take care of business,” said Gooding. Finishing five shots back in second place was Hartsville’s Emma Charles. In a tie for third was Adrian Anderson (Murrells Inlet) and Paige Paolucci (Blythewood) with matching two over par 75′s.
Special thanks to Lancaster Golf Club for hosting the Caddie Classic and to Marilyn Thompson for her sponsorship in honor of “Papa” Ed Thompson. Ed Thompson always had a special place for children and helping ones in need. For nearly 20 years, his mission was to find out what Greenwood (Indiana) children needed and get it for them. He started the Clothe-A-Child and kept the program going for almost two decades which still goes on today. After his passing in 2016, Marilyn decided to keep his spirit of giving alive with the SCJGA in the form of a sponsorship. For the last two years she has donated 30 sets of brand new Wilson Junior Golf Clubs to the SCJGA to distribute to aspiring junior golfers in need of clubs. We thank Marilyn and the Connell family for their donations and efforts to grow the game of golf thru compassion while helping a child.
