This morning, Palmetto Dunes – George Fazio course welcomed 82 male and female junior golfers for the first round of the 27th Jimmy Self Invitational.
Matthew Baxley of North Augusta fired a first-round score of two-under par 68 to lead the boys 13-18 division. He had four birdies today and holds a one-shot lead heading into round two.
“Today was a pretty good day,” said Baxley. “I got a lot of putts to fall today which was a benefit in this wind. Getting the ball in play off the tee is key out here, so I’m just going to try and get it in play and take it from there.”
Connor Rose of Greer holds the second-place position in the boys division, finishing the day at one-under par 69.
In the girls 13-18 division, Anne Fernandez of Bluffton holds the round one lead, finishing the day at two-over par 72. She fired an impressive four birdies and an eagle to hold a two-shot lead.
“I started off really rocky today,” said Fernandez. “But I managed to kind of turn it around on my front nine. I putted really good and it was windy so I’m happy with my score. I plan to just try and keep it steady and take my time tomorrow.”
Kaylee McElwain of Aiken currently sits in second, posting a first-round score of four-over par 74.
The second round of the 27th Jimmy Self Invitational begins tomorrow, July 30, at 9:00 A.M. off #1 and #10.
About the Jimmy Self Invitational
Named in honor of a man who gave so much to golf, the Jimmy Self Invitational was originally one of the top high school tournaments in South Carolina and has now become one of the SCJGA’s major junior championships. The 54-hole event has been presented by Greenwood Development since its inception. The original idea was to rotate the tournament’s location between Greenwood Development properties in Charleston, Greenwood and Hilton Head Island. This year’s competition at Palmetto Dunes continues the Jimmy Self Invitational’s legacy, adding to South Carolina’s rich history of amateur and junior golf.
